Mayer & Associates, CPA, LLC, is a very supportive and non-judgmental public accounting firm on Connecticut's beautiful shoreline, offering a wide range of professional services to individuals, small and mid-sized business clients. Services include: tax return preparation, tax planning, personal financial planning, small business startup and consulting, not-for-profit startup, retirement planning, audits, compilations and reviews.

Though our clients represent a variety of industries, the firm specializes in the following: real estate, entertainment, not-for-profit, professional services, retail, and insurance.

H. Maggie Mayer established the Certified Public Accounting, Tax and Consulting firm of H. Maggie Mayer, CPA in 2000, which later became Mayer & Associates in 2008.  Maggie's emphasis is to offer individuals and small to mid-sized businesses the level of professionalism normally found in a larger public accounting firm, while offering her clients the personal attention of a smaller firm.

In addition to running the firm, Maggie is an adjunct associate professor at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. She teaches courses in accounting and accounting information systems.

Prior to starting her own firm, Maggie gained her public accounting experience working for PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP (PwC), in Hartford, Connecticut. While at PwC, Maggie served a variety of clients, with a focus on clients in the following industries: not-for-profit, higher education, insurance, investments/securities, banking, real estate, and employee benefit plans.

Before joining PwC, Maggie gained extensive experience at well known private companies in the following industries: insurance, banking, real estate and hospitality.

Maggie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Quinnipiac College in Hamden, Connecticut, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. She is a member of the Connecticut State Society of CPA's, and the American Society of Women Accountants where she currently serves as chapter auditor and previously served as Publicity Director. Maggie currently serves on the Board of Directors as an Advisory Board Member of Finances for the Shoreline Greenway Trail Inc of Connecticut.

Amongst her prior achievements is her completed hike of the entire distance of the Appalachian Trail. Maggie hiked the 2,146 mile footpath stretching from Georgia to Maine over a six-month (and 5 day) period. This endeavor was a triumph of planning, goal setting and persistence.

Annual participation in Continuing Professional Education courses offered by local chapters of national accounting and tax associations keeps the firm on the "leading edge" of ever-changing tax laws and accounting methods.

Computerized offices and internet access ensures clients accurate, efficient, state-of-the-art service at a competitve price. Clients all over the country have utilized my services thanks to the up-to-date technology being used in our office.

 

  Walter Morgenthaler, CPA/ABV, CVA

Walter is a 1989 graduate of Bryant College University in Rhode Island where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting.  He received his CPA certificate in 1995, his CVA certificate in 2000 and his ABV certificate in 2006.  In 2008 Walter formed his own practice, Walter J. Morgenthaler, CPA & Associates, LLC, prior to that he was a partner at Capossela Cohen, LLC where he had been since graduating from college.  Walter has since been kind enough to lend his talents to Mayer & Associates since December, 2009.

Walter is experienced in small business accounting, income taxation, business consulting and business valuations.  His areas of concentration are in small business accounting and financial statement preparation,  and income tax preparation and planning for closely held family companies and high net worth individuals in a variety of industries.

 Walter is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants and the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts.  He has served on numerous civic organizations both as a committee member, officer and commissioner.

 Outside of his professional career, Walter is a dedicated husband and father and lives in Stamford, Connecticut with his wife and three children with whom he enjoys boating, playing golf and traveling with. 

(Since we failed to mention he enjoys driving, let me add that he finds the commute from Fairfield County to be quite pleasurable.  Just look for his hot little sports car in our parking lot and you will know that he is here!)

 

 
DAWN 1  Dawn Popolizio, CAO

Dawn is an accountant with over 20 years experience in the Mortgage/Accounting industry.  She graduated from Briarwood College with a degree in Accounting.   Dawn Popolizio is known for providing business with a smile.  She consistently goes above and beyond to provide extraordinary service to her customers.  Dawn is focused, organized and dedicated.  She has an unending willingness to both teach and learn. 

Dawn has two wonderful children.  Her son, who is a brilliant trumpeter, will be starting high school in the Fall and her daughter, a talented basketball player, will be entering the 6th grade.  Dawn is starting her 5th year as the leader of her daughter’s Girl Scout troop.  This past year, she was chosen to hold a seat on the Girl Scout’s Service Unit Management Team.  In her free time, Dawn enjoys quiet reading, watching movies and playing basketball with her kids.  Her ultimate day would be spent either on the beach searching for seashells and curled up with a good book OR wandering the historical streets of Boston.

(And what we have failed to mention, is that she was Maggie's BOSS in the Investor Loan Department of the New Haven Savings Bank , now New Alliance, many, many years ago, and Maggie has been secretly plotting to get her on board ever since starting her own firm!)

 

 

  Judy Mayer, Director of First Impressions

Judy Mayer, as you might have guessed, is not only our esteemed Office Manager/Director of First Impressions, but, yes, she is also family.  You will feel she is your family too from the moment you walk in.  Always greeting you with a wonderful smile, making sure that you get all the answers you need in a friendly and timely manner.  We are so lucky to have her.  When she is not working at Mayer & Associates, she is playing with her grandchildren, keeping her husband in line, traveling, and entertaining a never ending stream of houseguests.   

   Nicole Tanner, Certified Bookkeeper

Nicole Tanner is a Quickbooks certified Bookkeeper. Nicole has been in the accounting field for 10 years, 5 of which she has been bookkeeping.  Prior to working for Mayer & Associates, she was a credit manager at SupremeMetal, Inc. in Georgia, a credit manager at C. Cowles & Co. in Connecticut, and “the woman behind the scenes” for her husband’s business while raising their two children.  Nicole is a “people person” and loves to help solve their bookkeeping dilemmas. In her free time, she loves to camp, travel, sing and spend time with her husband & children.

   Amy Fenner, Executive Assistant

Amy is our Executive Assistant and came to us from the Teaching World.  She filled in for a short time during tax season and realized that accountants are anything but boring (at Mayer & Associates anyway!) and decided to stay!  She has her Bachelors of Art in Psychology and Masters in Education.  Amy is a “people person” who deeply enjoys working with people of all ages which helped with the transfer from young children to “regular” people.

Amy has twins who are in their first year of high school.  Her son joined the football team this year as their starting kicker after developing his foot skills from 9 years of playing soccer. Her daughter has been a cheerleader since 4th grade and last year was on the first ever town competition team which made it all the way to Nationals in Florida and placed 2nd!  She then made the Varsity Squad this year as a Freshman. 

Amy has been one of her daughters Girl Scout Leaders for several years (with Maggie which was how they met). When not working at Mayer & Associates, Amy enjoys going for walks on the beach with her husband and Golden Retriever and skiing with her family.

 

  Renee Grailich, Tax Manager

Renee has over 20 years of experience in tax, audit and general accounting.  She graduated from Post University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Magna Cum Laude.  Prior to joining Mayer & Associates, Renee held positions in local firms where she enjoyed working with numerous non-profit organizations, privately-held businesses and individuals.  Early in her career, Renee left public accounting for the corporate world, but returned to public after just a few years when she realized how much she missed the pace and energy of public accounting and the opportunity to work with a variety of individuals in diverse situations and industries – oh, and the summer hours!

She is a member of both the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants. 

In the past, Renee had volunteered her services to Family Services Woodfield, assisting entrepreneurs in starting up new businesses and providing tax and accounting advice.  Through her volunteer work, she became involved with Bridgeport Youth Lacrosse and is extremely proud and pleased to now be serving on their Board of Directors.

Since both her sons are now grown and out of the house, Renee shares her ‘empty nest’ with her two golden retrievers, Boomer and Bella.  A fitness enthusiast, she frequents the gym after work and on weekends, and loves going for bicycle rides of 20 miles or more in good weather.  Another favorite warm weather activity is tending her large vegetable garden!
